Nestled in lush jungle on the banks of the New River, Lamanai is the most famous archaeological site in northern Belize and one of its largest ceremonial centers. Lamanai means “Submerged Crocodile” in the Mayan language, and images of crocodiles have been found on the excavated buildings, pottery, and figurines. Traveling to the site is an adventure in itself. An hour boat ride up the New River provides frequent wildlife sightings, and the dense jungle lends a wild feel to these ruins, which are still not completely excavated. Lamanai was occupied the longest of any Mayan site. In the 16th century, the Spanish found a thriving community here, and the ruined churches reveal attempts to convert the Maya. The archaeological site features more than 900 structures as well as a museum with exhibits of pottery, obsidian, figurines, and jade jewelry. Highlights include the Mask Temple, Temple of the Jaguar, and the High Temple, which visitors can climb for panoramic jungle views.

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the biggest, protected destinations in Belize. The reserve was founded in 1990 as the first wilderness sanctuary for the jaguar. Although roughly 60 of Belize’s 700 jaguars are believed to live in the sanctuary, your chances of seeing one are very slim. However, it’s an ideal environment for plant-spotting, bird viewing or seeking out other wildlife, and the trail system is the best developed in any of Belize’s protected areas.

Also known as the Cave of the Crystal Maiden, ATM cave was abandoned by the ancient Maya long before the arrival of the Europeans. As part of their religion, the ancient Maya priests performed sacred ceremonies in caves like ATM as they were believed to be gateways to the shadowy world of the gods. Having lain undisturbed for more than 1,000 years, ATM is a sacred time portal to the lost world of the Maya and contains many important relics, artifacts, and ritual items. The most famous attraction in the cave is the series of skeletal remains from bloody human sacrifices, including half a dozen young children whose heads were crushed. The Crystal Maiden is a complete skeleton of a young adult whose bones have taken on a metallic sheen from the crystals inside the cave.
